Major Barriers Faced by Newcomers – II

You should be ready to embrace the challenges of settling in your new home, Canada. We’ve talked about climate in the previous post. Let’s talk about the other challenges here.

Culture – Newcomers often experience a cultural shock on arriving in Canada. Not everyone is affected in the same way. How it affects you depends on your cultural background, and your willingness to accept the new culture. It’s important to learn to adapt to Canadian culture to be happy and successful here. Now, you don’t have to renounce your culture to settle in here. Canada is a great country that allows its people to practise their faith and follow their traditions. One must always respect other cultures and carry a positive attitude.

Community – Friends, family, and relatives do not accompany you to Canada. The feeling of loneliness can lead to frustration and depression. You must make new friends here. Canadians are very helpful and friendly. You should interact with your neighbours, participate in community events, visit the local library, talk to people you meet, and explore your neighbourhood. Networking is essential to build new relationships. Also, you must not hesitate to ask questions when needed.

Credentials – This is a major barrier for most immigrants. You may have graduated from a reputed university or educational institute in your home country, but your credentials may not help you much with your job search here. This could be very disappointing, and it may lead to stress. It would be a wise decision to have your academic and professional credentials assessed by an evaluation service such as WES (World Education Services) or ICAS (International Credit Assessment Service).

We wish you good luck in your pursuit of new opportunities.
