Major Barriers Faced by Newcomers - I

Leaving behind your family and friends to start a new life in another country can be overwhelming. It is important to be aware of the challenges and obstacles you might face in your settlement process. Make sure you have the right information before making a decision to move. Be ready to start a life from scratch. Prepare yourself for challenges - climate, culture, community, credentials, language, and laws. I like to refer to these as the Cs and Ls. I am going to talk about these one at a time.

Climate - The climate may be drastically different from your home country. Canada has pretty harsh winters. Now, you may say that you have experienced some bad winters in your home country, but believe me, when I say that Canadian winters may cause SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), I am not exaggerating. This can happen if you let yourself be inactive during the season. Warm winter jackets/coats, snow shoes/boots, hats, scarves, and gloves are must wear items in winter for survival at the physical level. Finding ways to keep yourself busy and active is essential for survival at the mental level. Enrolling in school, volunteering, playing a sport, participating in community events, and networking are some of the activities to help you start a new life.

I would like to mention the fact that Canada has four seasons- spring, summer, fall and winter.
